Week 10 PJ ‘s Training Summary 3-10-11 to 9-10-11
Fluro did send me a plan through for this week. However the last thing he said to me on Thursday was “ just run when you can…..and make sure they are over an hour ”
Monday
After a very early arrival in Cairns (4:30am) we picked up a hire car and drove up the very scenic Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas. Awesome drive at dawn along the coast, beautiful beach on one side and sugar cane fields and rainforest on the other. This Highway is the bike course for Challenge Cairns. This would be a great race to do one day. We settled in to our accommodation and had a quick drive around town. We lazed around the pool and then about 1pm I headed out for a run. It was pretty warm about 28 degrees and very humid. I ran down the main drag and then out past the Marina, onto the main road in to Port Douglas heading out to the Highway. I was sweating like crazy and had soon consumed the water bottle I had taken with me. A few people looked at me with a “what are you doing you crazy bugger” look on their face !!! I turned around into a nice cooling sea breeze going back which cooled me down nicely. I still stuck to the shade of the massive palm trees though.
Tuesday
We had an epic trip today out to the outer reef by catamaran to a 50 metre long pontoon where you can dive, snorkel, go out on a sub/boat, take a helicopter flight. They sure catered for everybody !! We opted to snorkel around. The coral and marine life was just incredible. Sam saw a reef shark and of course it was after him and he narrowly escaped death…..mmmmffff teenagers !! This was a full day excursion and was awesome. Would highly recommend it.
Wednesday
This was a kick back day. The weather wasn’t as nice but we went down to the beach for a while. I ran again about 1pm but it was cooler than Monday. I ran out the same way but this time ran back down 4 Mile Beach.
Thursday
Another tour today. We took a trip up to Karunda in the rainforest on the tourist railway which uses the old line carved out in the late 1800’s to service the gold rush. Quite a steep climb so 2 diesel engines required to pull it up. Scenery was spectacular. Quite an engineering feat with 15 tunnels hand dug out of the rock. The train stopped at Barren Falls on the way up. We spent some time in Karunda township over lunchtime. Very geared towards the tourist. We took a tour on a river boat down the Barren River adjacent to the World Heratige listed rainforest. Just magnificent. I was thinking the water looked good enough to swim in…..till we saw the croc on the river bank.
Friday
We checked out this morning and headed into Cairns for the day to check it out. Had a great day there and then headed out to the airport to fly home. The flight had been delayed so it meant we didn’t get in the door at home until just after midnight. We were supposed to get in at 9:30pm. A bugger as I was meeting Freo group 1 boys at 6:00am at the Raff’s for a hills ride !!
Saturday
Only five of us showed this morning. Quite a few off with it being school holidays. I was quite happy to see some of the hard core boys missing !!! A non eventful ride but very enjoyable with still and warm conditions and not too hard. My legs felt fresh too after the break. I love riding with these guys, they are all such good riders . Coffee and berry muffin at Troppo’s then home for a protein load up. The afternoon was spent watching the 2 quarter final games. Wales v Ireland and England v France. Both great games of rugger.
Sunday
Some crap weather on the radar so it was out the door at 5:42 am to get the long run done and dusted. I ran down to the river and everything was very still and grey….the calm before the storm. The legs felt good, I had some tunes on and was focused on staying at my aerobic threshold. I reached the turn around point, almost at Mount Henry Bridge. As I turned it started to spit rain. The legs were getting a bit heavy now. I was supposed to pick it up a bit for the last 45 mins but was struggling to do that. By the time I got to Waylen Bay the heavens opened. So much rain came down so quickly. The drains were flooding and the roads had about 30mm of water cover all over. Once I got to North Lake Road my shoes were completely soaked and heavy. The 4k home from there was hard work. 25.83k all up 2 hours and 23 min. 2 more quarter final games this afternoon, and of course more beer. South Africa v Australia and New Zealand v Argentina. I feel buggered after being involved in 4 games this weekend !!!
Nice for the body and soul to have an easy week……..
Totals:- Swim zero k, Bike 100.61k, Run 50.66k 9 hours 16 min
